Trafficking Culture’s Senior Research Fellow Neil Brodie has written a piece for SAFE – Saving Antiquities for Everyone
SAFE is a non-profit organisation that campaigns to preserve cultural heritage across the world.Through their website, social media and various projects, they aim to raise awareness about the problem of looting, smuggling, and trading illicit antiquities.
SAFE organises an annual Global Candlelight Vigil, the first of which was in 2007. The Vigil is in remembrance of the looting of the Baghdad Museum in 2003. As part of the 2013 Vigil, Neil wrote a statement for the SAFE Blog entitled ‘It is no surprise that the looting continues’.
In 2008, Neil was a recipient, along with the late Donny George Youkhanna, who was Director-General of the Iraqi Museums at the time of the 2003 looting, of the SAFE Beacon Award. The award recognises outstanding achievements in the continued the illicit trade in antiquities and its impact on archaeological heritage.
